A unique area to visit while in Costa Rica is the serene small village of Mal Pias. Situated on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica approximately the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, this area boast of vibrant colors and sceneries. The name Mal Pais originated from the Chorotoga tribe who inhabited the area. Legends in the area would tell us that the word Mal Pais is used from the word “mah pah” which is a big stone used by the Indians to draw. Many of the finest Costa Rica vacation rentals are located in the Mal Pais area.

Seen as the Hawaii of Latin America, the coast of Mal Pais is made up of very unique rocky formations which create a fascinating and interesting shore . Looking at those rock formations, one would marvel at the how mother nature sculptures herself and creates a fabulous work of art. Even more , if you stroll down the beach of Mal Pais , you will be impressed with the sight of pelicans sailing along the shorelines or diving for fish! Such a beautiful and peaceful sight for all to see !

There are many reasons why people come to Mal Pais. Divers would come for its one of a kind and pristine subtropical nature. University students from around the world studying ecology and biology come trekking from the nearby Cabo Blanco Park which is only some 3km south of the village. The Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve is like a nursery for many aquatic species, most of them endangered or threatened by human progress .

Mal Pais offers a tourist haven along its three kilometer road which is dotted with charming hotels . Most of these Costa Rica hotels offers fabulous views and very good accommodations guaranteed to make you feel at home while soaking up the beautiful  sunset of the Pacific.

Near by Cabo Blanco

The oldest of Costa Rica’s National Parks, the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve is located at the extreme southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. It is one of the most beautiful such nature reserves in the country, with a unique combination of weather and geographical destination . It is also one of the first protected areas established in Costa Rica , all the way back in 1963, a first step that has now become an extensive national park system and has led the republic becoming one of the world’s foremost authorities in the ecotourism industry.

The attractive features held in the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve are many and varied. It encompasses over a two thousand acres of mixed forest, known as subtropical forest , as well as primary and secondary forest, and is home to a magnificent menagerie of animals that includes anteaters, armadillos, coyotes, howlers, monkeys (both spider and capachun) and white tail deer just to name a few .

The gateway to the reserve is Cabuya, a tight knit community that exists on the border of the main gate to the Reserve and offers excellent accommodation and hospitality as well as numerous activities which just to name a few are sports fishing, bird watching (Cabo Blanco is the nesting place for more than a hundred and fifty different types of birds), beachcombing, hiking, scuba diving or trips to various places such as the Isle of Tortuga and an underwater volcano. All in all, Costa Rica National Park, Cabo Blanco is the perfect area to sample the unspoiled simplicity of an old fashioned Costa Rican way of life. When visiting the southern Nicoya Peninsula Mal Pais and Cabo Blanco are definitely worth the visit.
