PostHeaderIcon Facts You Need To Know about Spending Time In Inverness, Scotland

Inverness, widely called the capital of the Scottish Highlands, was eventually granted city status in two thousand and one and is currently the only Highland city. Uniquely (in the United Kingdom) Inverness has no statutory boundaries which causes problems with population statistics. The calculations are made less accurate by the fact that Inverness’ population is on the increase, Inverness has the United Kingdom’s highest growth rate. One fact we can state with some certainty is that the city has a fairly happy population, in 2008 the Telegraph took a survey of the quality of life in 189 cities in Great Britain and the city came fifth. So we can say that Inverness is a beautiful place in which to stay for some time and this is more than likely one of the reasons which make Inverness incredibly popular with tourists. Luckily there is a large number of Inverness bed & breakfast accommodations with the majority of it being able to be booked online.

Inverness is also called the gateway to the Highlands of Scotland for the obvious fact that it is the best place to make the most of the Highland public transport system and an incredible amount of visitor attractions are relatively easy to get to. Probably the best way to see them is by using an organized tour or day trip. There are a few coach companies visiting places such as, Loch Ness, Urquart Castle or Culloden or for the more adventurous tourists you can to visit Orkney or John O’Groats in a day. It is also possible to find a few city tours, such as the Terror Tour.

A small amount of visitors decide to stay in two different locations in the Scottish Highlands such as Fort William and Inverness. The town of Fort William is very popular with sports men and women especially ramblers, rock climbers and hill walkers who take their chances climbing up Ben Nevis which looks down upon the town center. Similar to Inverness Fort William bed & breakfast accommodation and rather like most Scotland bed and breakfast it is most often cheap, excellent value for money and incredibly comfortable, clean and tidy with the best hospitality.

One of the most important things to know is that the nearest airport to Inverness is, roughly, seven miles east of the city at Dalcross. You can catch a bus or hail a cab to the busy but small airport which is quite cheap. If you will be needing maps of Inverness then you should get one of the free ones at the tourist office, in the town center. While you are in the city you should remember to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the ’stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an interactive experience which is great fun.
