Scotland, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain, is an incredible destination to take a short break with heaps of attractions including some of the best museums and galleries in the UK, countryside ideal for ramblers, hikers, hill-walkers, mountain climbers and others as well as a huge selection of fortified houses, castles, country houses and historical buildings. Below I discuss the island of Arran and explain why the island is such a superb vacation destination.
Arran is the 7th largest Scottish island and even though Arran is often said to be in the Hebrides it is actually located further south in the Firth of Clyde. With tourism being the island’s main industry you will not find it surprising to discover that there are a great many hotels on the Isle of Arran . Although the vast majority of folk arrive at the island in order to enjoy the awe inspiring scenery the island also has a reasonable selection of visitor attractions including; Brodick Castle Gardens, Kildonan Castle, Arran Transport Museum and Arran Heritage Museum.
There are a number of population centres, the largest settlement is Brodick, where you will find the ferry terminal with sailings to Ardrossan on the Scottish mainland. Lamlash, situated 4 miles to the south of Brodick, is the point of departure to Holy Island.
Lochranza is biggest population centre in the northern half of the island and will find the ferry terminal with ferries running to Claonaig on the Scottish mainland. It is vital that you know that the ferry only sails in the summer months. The village is set in a large, and very picturesque, bay with the ruined Lochranza Castle being the most popular tourist attraction.
Blackwaterfoot is the most populous village on the west coast of Arran. It has a tiny harbour, a pub (bar) and a garage (including a petrol (gas) sta (gas)tion). Different villages to visit include; Corrie (north of Brodick), Catacol (in the north), Whiting Bay (south of Brodick), Kilmory (south coast)and last but not least Pirnmill home to the best beach on the Isle of Arran.
